After much investigation, I found that my initial problem was a faulty driver for the BF810. This was easily rectified by d/l another. Still permanent Tx however and I then found the following conditions when comparing my old PC with the new.
On the RS232 DB9 socket on the old PC, Pin 7 (RTS Line) has -12V when on Rx and +12v when on Tx as selected by MixW programme. On the new PC the Pin 7 (out of the BF810 adaptor) has +5V on Rx and 0v on Tx. This in conjunction with the inline keying cct which is an npn transistor gives exactly the reverse of what is required. It would be possible to change the inline cct to accept the reversed keying but it would not then be easy to go back to operation with the older PC. I'm going to use VOX operation and scrap the firm PTT but its a sloppy way to go. 3D2BA |

This isn't exactly a program in a sense but the nue-psk , modem, which uses no computer, will have olivia this summer, which will be proved interesting. I own one for a spare radio and it performs quiet well on the other modes in it, so I do not see any problem with the olivia mode on it. POB/K8LEN This is great news to me! I have several interfaces and 2 SDR rigs that don't even need interfaces BUT I always wanted to get one of the Nue-PSK devices - but without Olivia, my favorite mode naturally, I just could not justify getting one. I may save my pennies and get one when they add Olivia to their list of supported modes. It would come in handy now and then for portable operation without having to use a laptop or netbook. Thanks for the info! ---Gary WB8ROL |

Hello All .......... Has anyone had experience with USB to DB9 (RS232) adaptors ? I have recently set up a new Compaq PC which only has USB connectors and had to purchase an adaptor (BF810) to connect my PTT function to the Tx/Rx when on Olivia or other digital modes. The problem is that the adaptor puts a permanent 4.5 volt potential on the pin 7 line and this gives permanent keying to the PTT line via the inline transistor keyer. This may be an unavoidable feature of these adaptors but I wonder if anyone has any clues ? Research on the web so far only shows the usual jungle ! ! Thanks 3D2BA I've used several USB to Serial adapters with several commercial digital interfaces and never had any problems. Also use one that goes into my FT-100D Data port for rig control with no problems. I doubt that this helps but I wonder if it is a problem with the particular adapter you are using? Perhaps another would work. Good luck on solving the problem. Hopefully someone know more than I do hi hi ---Gary WB8ROL |

A lot of the Europeans have used this mode in the 14.103-14.107 area too in the past AND when (and IF) the bands ever get hot into Europe again I suspect you'll see a lot more activity there. The 1000 and 2000hz modes are also more impervious to QRM from more narrow modes too - another nice advantage.

I've been trying this mode a bit (1000/32) as well around 14107. But it may be more successful mid-day on the weekends, rather than early evenings when I get home. Also my wire-to-tree antenna needs some work since the last thunderstorm blew by. I've got some "stealth" copperweld coming in, and will use a counterweight for tension rather than tying it off. HOA prevents me from putting up the Telex 15-el Log-periodic I'd really like to have 8^)

As a follow up I checked out the web site for gmfsk ( http://gmfsk.connect.fi/ ) and see that the latest version that is available is the same version that has been available for years - gMFSK 0.7pre1
It has a copyright on the About screen that says 2005 so it's probably safe to say that they have not done any updates lately. It doesn't have that many bells and whistles but it does do most of the common modes including Olivia, PSK, RTTY, MFSK, Throb, HELL, MT63, and CW. It doesn't do some of the newer modes including Contestia, THOR, and others. It does decode and send real well and is light weight. Not bloated like some of the newer programs. And while it's interface is not inspired and fantastic - it does have a real decent waterfall and a fair graphical interface that is easy to get used to. |
